Independence Day. What does it mean to you? How will you celebrate? I am thankful for the freedoms we have as Americans. I also want to remember all freedom comes with a cost. May veterans sacrificed their lives, their health, for our freedom. We celebrate independence from British rule without representation. Are we truly independent? Are we free to do whatever we desire? Many live as if this is the reality. We all have limits to our freedom and independence. There are laws at all levels of society and government. We also have natural law and God’s law.

Sin has been defined as man’s declaration of independence from God. We all are dependent and serve someone. The choice we have is whom we will serve. Will we serve God or Satan?

And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Joshua 24:15

Are you choosing to serve the Lord every day? Have you surrendered you will, your life to Him? Jesus said of Himself He could do nothing. His life was a life of total dependence on His Father. Are we living like Jesus? Have we humbled ourselves to the point of death, even death on a cross? Are we willing to deny ourselves and take up our cross daily?

We see in society people demanding their rights. Some such as equality, justice and a level playing field are rights we as Christians should be supporting and striving to achieve. Some seem to be rather childish (at the risk of getting myself into trouble). No one can tell me to wear a face mask. Really? Can the government tell you not to smoke in public? What do we do when your freedom affects others safety? Whose freedom is more important? Are we being selfish? The real question is what would Jesus do? What did Jesus do?

Jesus never did one selfish act. He lived a life of service and putting the needs of others before His own. Are we living like Jesus? Are we treating His children, the purchase of His blood in a way that honor and reflects Jesus?

True freedom comes when we are in harmony with God and His teaching and laws.

So I will live in freedom, because I want to follow your orders. Psalm 119:45 (NCV)

"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24

Do you want to live in freedom? Whose orders are you following? To which master are you loyal? Independence Day is when we choose to serve Jesus. If Jesus sets you free you will be free indeed.
